Fakir Lalon Shah was a renowned Bengali mystic, spiritual philosopher, and revered guru of Baul music. Although his exact birth date is unknown, he passed away on October 17, 1890, in Cheuriya, Kushtia.
Through his songs, Lalon explored deep philosophical questions such as: “Who am I?”, “What is my identity?”, and “Why have I come into this world?” His teachings centered around the ideas of humanism (Manob Dharma), the soul (Ātmatattva), the body as a vessel (Dehotattva), and universal love.
Lalon rejected all divisions based on caste, creed, or religion. He firmly believed that no discrimination should exist above humanity. His songs and spiritual vision continue to inspire values of non-sectarianism, human compassion, and inner awakening in Bengali society even today.
Lalon is believed to have composed over 3,000 songs, collectively known as Lalon Geeti, which form a cornerstone of Baul music and mystic literature.
He is remembered not only as a composer but as a torchbearer of a non-sectarian, guru-based humanist spiritual tradition. Even more than a century later, his philosophy remains profoundly relevant—offering insights into human liberation, women's awakening, non-sectarianism, politics, and the foundation of a just society.
